Mission

The Neurorights Foundation is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to shaping the future of brain science and innovation, a future where neurotechnologies are leveraged for social good and safeguarded from misuse.

What is neurotechnology?

Devices capable of recording or altering the activity of the brain and the wider nervous system.

In 2017, Dr. Rafael Yuste, a leading neuroscientist renowned for pioneering novel neuroimaging techniques and spearheading the U.S. BRAIN Initiative, convened a group of 25 neuroscientists, ethicists, machine intelligence engineers, and clinicians from around the world in New York City to explore the social and ethical dimensions of neurotechnologies. The group concluded that neurotechnology presents a fast-emerging frontier without guardrails or guidance, and that emerging neurotechnologies must respect and preserve people’s privacy, identity, and agency. After publishing key ethical principles for neurotechnologies and AI in peer-reviewed Nature, Dr. Yuste established the Neurorights Initiative at Columbia University.

In 2022, Dr. Yuste partnered with Jared Genser, an international human rights lawyer, and Jamie Daves, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, to launch the Neurorights Foundation. The Foundation conducts cutting-edge research, spearheads global neurotechnology governance efforts, and guides responsible innovation with consumer and medical neurotechnology companies.

Global Neurotechnology Market

Neurotechnology is poised to transform every facet of modern life, from medicine and mental health to the future of work, education, and entertainment. This is more than science and innovation: it’s the future unfolding.

The future is here, and each new breakthrough pushes the boundaries of what it means to be human. Neurotechnologies have vast potential to heal, elevate, and connect us in ways we’ve never known, but they also pose significant risks.

What is Neurotechnology?

In the wrong hands, neurotechnologies could be used to harvest sensitive information, erode free will, manipulate thoughts, and deepen inequalities. Navigating this new frontier responsibly means confronting these risks head-on.

Influencing the brain means influencing the future. The time to act is now.
